The Problem: Unsafe Housing Conditions in Our Community

In Volusia County, thousands of elderly, disabled, and underserved residents are living in unsafe and unhealthy housing conditions:

  • Aging Population in Need:
    • Nearly 33% of Volusia County residents—about 188,376 people—are age 60 or older.
    • Of the 44,384 elderly-owned households, around 42% are considered low- to moderate-income.
    • Many elderly renters are extremely low-income and severely cost-burdened, with little left over for critical home repairs.
  • Unsafe Flooring and Health Risks:
    • Water damage, leaks, and moisture can lead to structural floor damage and hidden mold growth in just 24–48 hours.
    • Mold and damp conditions are linked to asthma, respiratory problems, infections, and allergic reactions—especially dangerous for elderly and immune-compromised individuals.
    • Damaged or unstable flooring also increases the risk of falls, slips, and injuries, leading to loss of mobility and quality of life.

These conditions leave many vulnerable neighbors at risk, often living in homes that actively threaten their health and safety.

The Solution: The Hope Underfoot Initiative

At Cane Surfaces, we believe everyone deserves a safe, healthy place to call home. That’s why we created the Hope Underfoot initiative—an ongoing program that turns flooring projects into direct action for community good.

Here’s how it works:

  • 3% of every flooring project completed by Cane Surfaces is allocated to the Hope Underfoot Fund.
  • This fund covers new flooring materials and full installation for individuals and families in need—prioritizing elderly, disabled, and underserved residents.
  • Eligible recipients are selected through a community-based application and voting process.
  • On average, every 10 commercial projects completed allows us to fully fund one complete flooring upgrade for a household in need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at sprouty@canesurfaces.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Hope Underfoot is a charitable initiative created by Cane Surfaces in October 2025. Our mission is to provide safe, healthy flooring for elderly, disabled, and underserved individuals living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions. We fund and install new flooring in homes that need it most—starting right here in our local community.

For every commercial flooring project completed through Cane Surfaces, 3% of the total cost is donated directly to the Hope Underfoot Fund. That money is used to purchase flooring materials and cover installation costs for recipients in need. Additionally, we accept volunteer help and direct donations from individuals, businesses, and community partners.

On average, every 10 commercial flooring projects fully funds one complete home flooring installation for a recipient in need. As our project volume and donor base grow, so does our impact. In our first year, we aim to support 10–15 households, with plans to expand significantly in the years ahead.

We prioritize elderly, disabled, disaster-impacted, and low-income individuals or families living in unsafe, damaged, or unsanitary flooring conditions. Applications are reviewed and selected through a community-based process to ensure fairness and transparency.

100% of donated funds go directly toward materials, installation, and recipient support—not overhead. Our administrative costs are covered separately by Cane Surfaces. We document each project and share before-and-after photos, recipient stories (with permission), and year-end impact reports to keep our donors and community informed and engaged.

Yes. Hope Underfoot was officially established in October 2025 and is currently in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Once finalized, donations will be fully tax-deductible in accordance with IRS guidelines. Until then, consult with your tax advisor regarding potential deductions.

We are currently focused on Volusia County, Florida, and surrounding areas—but we plan to expand our reach as resources and capacity allow.
